At Pathways to Education, we believe that every young person has the potential to overcome challenges and build a bright future. We provide a holistic approach to supporting youth in underserved communities, ensuring they have the tools, guidance, and resources they need to graduate from high school. Talon’s story is a testament to the impact of the Pathways to Education Program, as he navigated the complexities of growing up in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside and found success through the support of his community, education, and his own determination.
Here is Talon’s story:
“Support, community, and education—these words come to my mind when I think of Pathways. Being Indigenous and growing up in the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver, I’ve seen a lot of poverty, violence, and addiction in my community and my own family. School didn’t always come easy, but Pathways staff helped me take school more seriously and us Pathways students held each other accountable to get our work done.
I enjoyed volunteering at a community centre in my neighbourhood—leading sports activities, teaching students how to cook, and leading a Boys Club—but I hadn’t thought about a career. That was, until Grade 11, when a guest speaker who worked in the trades visited my class. I was intrigued. Pathways then helped me explore trades options and I decided to enroll in a program for Grade 12 students wishing to pursue an apprenticeship. It was challenging but rewarding too.
I successfully graduated from high school and began working as a plumber. Things were going well until 2022, when I was laid off. That’s when I decided to form my own property service business. I just picked up my cleaning tools and got to work. My business relies on door-knocking, which comes easy to me since I consider myself outgoing.
When I’m not working with my hands, I like to make hip-hop music. Writing about the things I’ve seen and lived through makes me feel better. It started off as a hobby, but I’ve now performed over 40 shows in my community. Without the struggle, I wouldn’t be where I am now. I’m grateful that I’ve had the opportunity to take risks and tap into different avenues—working in trades, being an entrepreneur, and pursuing music. My hope and message in my music is that you can chase your dreams, no matter your circumstances.

There are so many other young people like me. They have the work ethic and eagerness to change the world. But when you are surrounded by the struggles of poverty, dropping out of school is a very real risk. With the right supports, earning that diploma can be the start of something great.
Pathways is part of my story; I wouldn’t be who I am today without it. I’m proud to call myself a first-generation tradesman, musician, and entrepreneur. I’m breaking all the cycles.”
