From Newcomer to New Career: My Journey to Success in Canada

When I first arrived in Canada, I was excited about the opportunities ahead, but restarting my career proved to be much more challenging than I had expected. Back home, I had built a successful career with over ten years of experience in a government role. I believed that experience would help me transition into the Canadian workforce, but I quickly discovered that finding employment was not easy.

Despite submitting numerous applications, I received very few responses. Employers often looked for Canadian experience, something I did not yet have. With each unsuccessful application, my confidence began to fade. What had once felt like a promising new chapter started to feel uncertain, and I questioned how I would rebuild my professional life in a new country.

Everything changed when I connected with WorkBC. From our very first interactions, I felt supported and understood. The team helped me strengthen my resume, taught me how to tailor my applications using ATS-friendly techniques, and provided valuable guidance throughout my job search journey. Their encouragement helped me see that my previous experience still had value and that I could successfully adapt to the Canadian job market.

As I worked with WorkBC, I realized that investing in new skills would open more doors for me. With their support, I enrolled in Cybersecurity Strategy & Risk Management training, which WorkBC helped fund. The program challenged me, expanded my knowledge, and gave me the confidence to pursue opportunities in a growing field.

After successfully completing the training, my hard work paid off. I secured a full-time position in the IT industry—one that perfectly combines my years of professional experience with the new skills I had gained through my studies. It was a milestone that once seemed out of reach, and it marked the beginning of a new and rewarding chapter in my career.

I am especially grateful to my Case Manager, Rashi, whose constant encouragement and unwavering support kept me motivated during difficult moments. I would also like to thank Alberto, the Centre’s Assistant Manager, for his valuable guidance throughout my training application process. Their belief in my potential made a meaningful difference in my journey.

Today, I look toward the future with confidence and optimism. What began as a challenging transition has become a story of resilience, growth, and new opportunities. I am deeply grateful to WorkBC for helping me rebuild my career in Canada and for providing the support that turned my goals into reality.
