The Vietnamese Youth Development Program (VYDP) assists Vietnamese youth, ages 12 through 24, and their families with integration into Canadian Society and assists in preventing involvement in entrenched, marginal, or illegal activities.
The VYDP identifies the needs and concerns of participants to develop and implement relevant accessible social, educational, recreational, cultural, leadership, and volunteer programs for youth. The VYDP worker provides assessment, short-term counselling, re-referral, and support for Vietnamese youth, and works closely with the Vancouver school system to run programs in multiple locations across East Vancouver.
The program provides a range of activities and opportunities for youth throughout the year:
- Leadership program
- Summer program
- Cultural Festival involvement
- Lunar New Year celebration
- School lunch program
- Community Kitchen in Downtown Eastside
- Career exploration workshops
- Mentorship opportunities
- Afterschool & Pro-D Day recreational activities
- Fundraising & volunteer event opportunities
- Life skill workshops
Programming supports youth to move away from risk-taking activities, build confidence, engage in peer support, and provide necessary guidance to become active and positive members of both the Vietnamese and broader communities.
