Pacific Community Resources requires a Youth Care Worker for a special education and counseling program that integrates academic programming and recreational activities with individual and group counseling. Honour Secondary School is designed for students aged 13 to 19 who require a more supportive environment with a higher staff to student ratio.

Position Summary:

The Youth Care Worker is a member of the team responsible for the emotional and school needs of youth in Pacific Community Resources’ school programs. The core role is to provide basic care and nurturing, set reasonable expectations and limits, and to participate in planning the achievement of identified goals for individual youth. This requires a sound understanding of both normal and delayed or problematic development behaviours and barriers, impulsivity, attachment issues, and the effects of abuse, and learning disabilities such as FASD and ADHD. Specific skills such as sports, arts and crafts, and recreation planning are an asset in engaging youth in meaningful activities.

The successful applicant will possess a strong ability to provide assessment, behavior management, family outreach, assist the teacher in the classroom and student tutoring preferably in Math and Science. As part of a team of youth care workers and teacher(s), the applicant will have strong skills in teamwork, group dynamics and program planning. The successful candidate will be responsible for planning and facilitating the sports/recreation program.  Academic and Job Experience Required:

B.A. in a related field plus 1 year related experience working in a high school OR Child and Youth Care Diploma plus 3 years’ experience working with multi-barriered or at-risk youth,

Basic Requirements:

  • Criminal Records Check
  • Standard First Aid and CPR
  • Class 4 Driver’s License and Driver’s Abstract
  • Use of Own Vehicle with Reimbursement
  • Sound Judgement, Tact and Effective Interpersonal Skills     

Desired Requirements:

  • Sexual Abuse Training
  • Substance Abuse/Addictions Counselling Training
  • Trauma Informed Practice
  • Learning Disabilities Training including FASD, ADHD, Early Childhood Education, Special Needs
  • Bronze Swimming Medallion
  • Other certification in Recreation or Sports

Salary Range:     $22.74/hour – $25.88/hour, plus benefits
