Youth Substance Use Support Recovery Program

Pacific Community Resources Society provides a range of services from Vancouver to Keremeos, with approximately 40 programs and 270 staff members. Our programs include housing services, youth centres, employment training and skill building, education, and drug and alcohol addictions treatment, support and prevention programs.
The Regular Full Time Youth Care Worker (Live-In) is a member of the residential and clinical care team which is responsible for the direct care of youth and young adults placed at one of our two substance use supportive recovery homes in East Vancouver. The program provides transitional and supportive recovery programming for youth with persistent substance use issues with or without concurrent mental health issues. The programs provide a post-detox, substance free setting in a safe, supportive environment.
There are 3 positions (per house), each working for 10 days spread across a 14 day period, under the title of “Houseparent”, and provides daily residential support and guidance to program residents alongside an in-house clinical team. An overnight awake staff will be on shift nightly. Live-In Home Support Workers receive free full time rental accommodation in a separate legal suite or laneway house located on the property. Pacific Community Recourses Society will consider applicants with temporary worker status or sponsorship to obtain Canadian Permanent Residency.
This position requires a sound understanding of addictions, mental health, and trauma informed practices.
The successful candidate will have a strong knowledge base of successful addictions treatment practices for youth and young adults, and the ability to balance clinical methodologies with recreational and relationship based practice.
Key Areas of Accountability:
1)Maintain a Safe and Supportive Environment and Provide a High Standard of Basic Care
- Lead the planning and managing of daily structure and routines (i.e., wake-ups, meal prep, daily chores and tasks, bedtimes, etc.)
- Through regular individual support and daily group facilitation, involve youth/young adult in enhancing and developing various living skills, such as: meal preparation, cooking, budgeting, shopping (food, clothes, etc.), gardening, hygiene, etc.
- Assist in admission and orientation routines for new admissions.
- Assist with transition and discharge planning.
- Participate in the implementation of a care plan for each youth/young adult in the program.
- Administer medications to youth in accordance with program policy and procedures
- Monitor activities of youth on and off site, unless directed otherwise by care plan or management strategies.
- Act as a positive role model for youth and assist youth in developing values of honesty, self-assertiveness, respect for self and others, a democratic viewpoint, lack of dependency on drugs, alcohol and self-abusive behaviour.
- Apply a range of behaviour management strategies, consistent with: logical consequences, standard practices, and agency policy.
- Identify potential crises and take steps to intervene effectively to prevent and/or diffuse these situations.
- As part of the team, takes responsibility for monitoring the health of the youth/young adult and facilitating/transporting to appointments with relevant professionals, as necessary.
- Monitor visits by family/friends of youth/young adult.
- Organize and participate in the provision of developmentally appropriate activities.
- Comply with all agency policies and procedures and reporting practices.
- Maintain good safety practices and employ a preventative approach.
2) Assist in the Implementation of a Comprehensive Assessment on Youth Involved in the Program:
- Timely completion of checklists, questionnaires, interviews, exercises, written and verbal reports, etc., in relation to understanding the youth and their perception of the world around them.
- Assist in the implementation of care plans and management strategies.
- Assist youth in exploring their actions and reactions to various situations, and assist them in identifying possible alternatives.
- Participate in the evaluation of social skills, life skills, strengths/resiliency, problem-solving abilities, coping patterns, etc.
- Timely written and/or verbal reporting of information relevant to the formal assessment of each youth, including: observations, communication from other service providers or families, comments or reports from youth, etc.
- Proactively assist youth in making an effective transition out of the program.
3) Leadership in Organizing Household Duties:
- Organize and assist in the completion of household tasks involving youth (i.e., meal planning; food purchasing and preparation; house cleaning; maintenance; etc.).
- Contribute towards maintaining the house and yard and encourage and supervise participation of youth in house/yard maintenance, in line with abilities, through promoting a sense of pride and spirit among residents.
- Assist in the completion of safety inspections of the house and making recommendations for repairs and improvements; reporting other safety issues regarding the house and yard as they arise.
4) Contribute to Team Performance
- Manages own time efficiently and works independently within a team framework.
- Communicate effectively and professionally within the team, including positive and critical feedback.
- Communicate professionally with other service providers, families/friends of the youth, neighbours, and members of the community.
- Communicates and/or promotes the agency’s mission/vision/values, funding needs, and value to the community.
- Attend and participate in staff/supervision meetings, committee meetings and agency staff meetings, as required.
- Understands the stresses of the job and takes steps to prevent/manage stress (burn-out).
5) Performance of Duties in Accordance With Accepted Standards of Practice:
- Documents all relevant information in the clinical file in accordance with program standard practices.
- Maintain clinical files in accordance with program standards.
- Timely completion of administrative reports (i.e., time sheets, petty cash receipts, etc.).
- Participate in periodic reviews/evaluations of program structures.
- Makes recommendations to improve program effectiveness and efficiency, as appropriate.
- Maintain CARF Accreditation and Health Authority standards
- Assist in orientation of new staff and auxiliary workers.
- Assist in the orientation, training, supervision and evaluation of practicum students and volunteers.
- Conduct aftercare activities (contact with youth after discharge, consult with new resource, etc.), as directed.
- Conduct follow-up activities (outcome evaluation surveys, etc.), as directed.
- Other duties as assigned.
Academic and Job Experience Required:
BSW, or BA in a related field plus 1 year experience or a 2 Year Child and Youth Care Diploma plus two years’ experience or the equivalent. Additional substance use/addictions training/experience is an asset.
- Criminal records check including the vulnerable sector
- Current standard first aid certificate
- Valid BC class 5 driver’s license and driver’s abstract
- Clear and concise communication skills, both verbal and written
- Addictions and Mental Health training/experience
- Crisis Intervention and De-escalation Training
- Strong understanding of anti-oppression and decolonizing practice
- Training to address Depression/Suicide/Mental Health Assessment an asset
- Residential experience with youth
- Other relevant training including FASD
- Knowledge of Attachment Theory
- Knowledge of Aboriginal cultural/healing practices, impacts of colonialism, racism
- Trained in Trauma-informed Practice
- Vancouver Manager of Addictions
Pay scale $160-$182/per 24 hour shift plus comprehensive benefits package including pension
