Pacific Community Resources Society (PCRS) is an award-winning, accredited not-for-profit that has served the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley for over 30 years. Our participants are often vulnerable or marginalized from society. PCRS is committed to integrated service delivery, which is people-centred, inclusive, collaborative, and evidence based. PCRS has an annual operating budget of approximately 24 million, employs nearly 350 staff, and engages over 200 volunteers.

PCRS seeks a full-time, highly-experienced family counsellor to provide brief mediation, skills building and development services to youth and their families, as identified by the Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD).

Position Summary:

This position requires a sound theoretical understanding of family systems, mediation, communication, abuse and neglect, and normal and delayed child and family development. The family counsellor must be able to assess child protection concerns if they arise and report back to MCFD in these situations. This requires a solid understanding of the effects and indicators of child abuse. This position operates as part of the surrey youth resource centres and functions as part of an integrated staff team.

 Primary Duties:

The family counsellor will have experience working with youth and their families, with specialized skills in the following areas:

  • Crisis response
  • Mediation
  • Conflict resolution
  • Post-traumatic issues
  • Difficult-to-engage youth
  • Marginalized youth populations
  • Drug and alcohol issues
  • Mental health issues
  • Group training
  • Parenting skills development
  • Cultural competency in working with Indigenous youth and families
  • Cultural competency in working with South Asian youth and families

Work Conditions

The family counsellor is expected to meet the unique needs of this population group and to work flexible hours, including evenings.

Academic and Job Experience Required:

MSW, BSW, or BA and four years social work experience, or the equivalent.

 Basic Requirements:

  • Criminal Record Check including the vulnerable sector
  • Driver’s license with business insurance use
  • Use of own vehicle required (mileage is paid)

Salary Range:     $30.86/hour to 35.35/hour, plus .58/hour in lieu of benefits
